On April 2, at NEXPO in Chicago, the Tampa Tribune awarded Brock Solutions a contract to supply 16 RTP Upgrade Packages. Currently, the Tribune maintains 16 GOSS reels under two TKS presses that were previously upgraded with AGS equipment.
According to Bill Barker, VP of Operations for the Tampa Tribune, “These new controls will allow us to enjoy improved productivity and provide more reliable delivery service to our customers by reducing the number of newsprint rolls that break during production. We anticipate these controls will allow older GOSS reels to perform as well as the TKS reels on two of the four presses installed in the mid 1980s.”
The Tribune selected the Brock Static Belt Reel package based on its track record and standard features and benefits, including:
- Elimination of obsolete components, including full tension upgrade
- Improved registration through precise tension control
- Accurate speed match using AC drive and standard motor, while eliminating brake, clutch, and magnetic pick up
- Time-stamped logging of all paste events, including detailed analysis of each event
- 24/7 remote support via the Internet or modem
The upgrades are scheduled for delivery in the fall of 2006, with installation and commissioning to involve 2 reels per week over an 8-week period to minimize disruptions to production. Brock Solutions, in conjunction with their press upgrade partner Masthead International, will commission and install the equipment.
Tampa also tapped Brock for other options such as replacement of paster brushes, pit cylinders, roll revolution sensors, etc. The paper, owned by Media General, will also take advantage of the Brock APRP (Advanced Press Reporting Package) system to track RTP issues, paste logs, statistics, etc.
