Project Methodology

Brock Solutions follows a very structured approach to systems design and project management. As a result, we have developed an enviable track record of delivering large and technically complex projects as specified, on time and within budget.

Project Management

On every project, large or small, a Project Manager is appointed. The role of the Project Manager is an important one; the Project Manager assumes responsibility for successful project completion. In addition to providing the customer with a single point-of-contact for project management, the Project Manager ensures that the project is executed in a manner that results in the delivery of a quality system according to plan.

Functional Specification

The Functional Specification describes the functionality, operation, and architecture of the proposed system. Items to be addressed include:

  • System architecture
  • System management issues
  • Modularization of the process (documented)
  • Data to be monitored and logged (finalized)
  • Screen and report formats
  • Alarm priorities and alarm handling (defined)

Simulation

Brock Solutions uses simulation software to test industrial applications. I/O simulation software allows users to quickly create on a PC a dynamic model that duplicates the behavior of the actual process and provides the PLC with real-time feedback without altering or adding to the project PLC code.

Factory Acceptance Testing

The final stage of testing is the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT). The “FAT” document outlining the testing procedure is submitted to the customer for approval. Internal testing is completed using the FAT document as a guideline. When the system passes internal testing the customer is invited to conduct the formal Factory Acceptance Test. The customer uses this test procedure to verify that all of the project requirements have been addressed, and to verify that the system is ready for installation.

Training

On every project the training needs for engineering, maintenance, and operations personnel are evaluated. User manuals and training for operations personnel are provided. The role of the simulation is important in the training methodology. With simulation, it is possible for operators to be trained in an environment that performs exactly like the real system. Experience shows that with simulation the learning period for operation of a new system is dramatically reduced, as operators train without the stress of training on “live” equipment.

Installation and Commissioning

On many projects there is a requirement to commission the new system while minimizing interruptions to the operation of the facility. The key to rapid system start-ups is extensive integrated testing before any installation work commences. The integrated testing will have tested and proven all interfaces to external sub-systems and devices prior to installation of the system.

Post Implementation Review

Within 60 days of commissioning the system, a Post Implementation Review is held with the customer to review all aspects of the project.
