Synopsis of Integrated Steel Maker’s OSIsoft PI Consulting/Integration Project
- Situation: An integrated steel maker implemented the OSIsoft PI data historian software platform to collect and analyze production performance data related to blast furnace operations.
- Issue: Focus on improving performance extended beyond blast furnace operations to include Ironmaking (expanded blast furnace operations), Steelmaking, DSPC (Direct Strip Production Complex), and Utilities.
- Requirement: Expanded PI implementation.
- Technology: Osisoft PI - modules applied include ACE, BatchView, ProcessBook, PI SDK, PI Server, and SMT. Interfacing involved a custom-developed ASP.NET-based web reporting system, with interfaces configured using standard protocols such as OPC, Datalink, and ICU.

- Brock Solutions' Role: The Brock team worked directly with customer personnel to:
- Consult about how best to implement PI and which tools best apply to the Ironmaking, Steelmaking, DSPC, and Utilities facilities
- Manage the projects as defined in each consulting exercise (each project within each area required its own specification and design, development, and deployment)
- Design, develop, and deploy the PI-based historian to handle 30,000+ data points over a distributed architecture (multiple collection nodes and separate ACE application nodes) complete with built-in redundancy (failover redundant/backup servers)
