Synopsis of Tube Mill Performance Monitoring Solution
- Situation: An industry leader in the production of hollow structural steel (HSS) looked to enhance operational performance by replacing manually-intense processes with automated software. Workflow processes at the customer’s three tube mills involved slitting, processing, and bundling. Nineteen sub-functions were also part of the workflow process, and were common to the three tube mills.
- Customer Objectives: Objectives for the performance-improvement initiative included enhancing shop-floor data collection; expanding reporting capabilities; maximizing information control; decreasing manual data entry.

- Brock Solutions' Role: Configure and deploy a MES solution to automatically capture:
- Set-up information used to prepare mills for size and/or gauge measures, including roll diameter, roll position, coil tension, coil width, weld power, target length, pieces required, bundle size, etc.
- Production information such as length, pieces per bundle, and downtime incidents; and measures it against Coil ID, Heat Number, Shift, etc.
- Process information used to evaluate product quality and mill performance. Included are such variables as speed, temperature, position, etc.
