Synopsis of Province-Wide Water and Wastewater Panel Project

  • Situation: For years, municipalities throughout the province of Ontario operated a variety of technology platforms for monitoring the flow of water and wastewater. With governmental concerns growing about water safety, cost effectiveness, and overall operational efficiency, the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) looked to implement a standardized technology protocol that all municipalities would be required to follow.
  • The Protocol: The protocol was based on providing OCWA with the capability to “communicate” with all water/wastewater stations throughout Ontario without having to leave a single, central location. The technology to support the protocol included hundreds of radio-controlled electrical panels, and a massive data historian involving 275,000 tags and over 800 PLCs.
  • The Role of Brock Solutions' Panel Shop: Build and install 700+ panels.
  • The Panels: Highly customized. Built for installation outdoors, with environmental conditions varying from thick northern bush to the middle of farmers’ fields. All panels procured were NEMA-4-rated (waterproof), with a significant number also being stainless-steel. All panels were radio controlled utilizing SCADAPak compact programmable controllers. Panels were built in groups of 100 units. Every two weeks for four straight years, crews of installers loaded trucks and travelled throughout Ontario to install the panels.
