DeviceNet Recontrol Enhances BHS Performance at Sacramento International Airport

Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is a key transportation hub in Northern California with numerous daily departures to various destinations. The performance of its baggage handling systems (BHS) is critical to ensuring a seamless travel experience for millions of passengers annually.

The Goal

Modernize the BHS Infrastructure

The baggage handling system at SMF B required several upgrades. Key objectives included modernizing the outdated control system and transitioning from DeviceNet to Ethernet IP to enhance bag tracking capabilities and improve network reliability. The lack of available spare parts for DeviceNet highlighted the urgency for this transition, as component failure could result in significant downtime.

After performing a study of the system, Brock, in partnership with Daifuku Services America and Redwood Electric, developed a detailed strategy for moving the entire controls system to a more robust, maintainable, industry-standard solution.

Despite the inherent risks of performing a replacement and recontrol during live operations, the team ensured zero disruption to ongoing operations during delivery.

The SMF Terminal B baggage system now boasts a modern infrastructure with enhanced programming logic, which has resulted in significant operational improvements.

A Lagging Bagging Handling System (BHS)

Winnipeg Airport was looking to enhance the efficiency of its BHS, which was operating on an outdated High Level and Lower Level Controls system. This necessitated the need for new servers, new PLCs, and an IT infrastructure upgrade.

Brock’s Approach:

Bring the Airport’s BHS Environment up to the Latest Standards

After performing a system audit, Brock Solutions developed new PLC code and recontroled the problem areas, followed by an upgrade from ControlNet to Ethernet. In parallel, the High Level Controls system was updated to support the new configuration, bringing the BHS up to the latest software standards.

The Solution:

A Robust Baggage Handling System

Upgrading to the latest version of SmartSort and Ignition HMI provided airport stakeholders with better visibility into the system. Innovative new features, including HMI Replay and BHS Map Replay, empower stakeholders to perform root cause analyses to find the answers to, “What happened and why?”
